To keep my birds safe & warm during the cold nights, I have run a green extension cord & attached it to a pet heater in the coop. It doesn't need to be a lot of heat to make a difference, this unit runs off 175 watts and gets hot to touch. I hope you all fair well this winter. A quick example to exercise & warm your chicken flock in the winter. The leaves break down into compost which helps with supplemental heating and keeping the ground insulated. I like to stack functions. In this case we create a leaf pile to help warm the area around the chicken coup and attract our chicken friends to play!
